Square Enix has released a few new screenshots and a brand new trailer showing off the epic conclusion of Lightning's last adventure in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

The newly released screenshots of Square Enix's upcoming last chapter in Lightning's dynamic adventure show off incredible visuals, displaying that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII still incorporates that bizarre and dynamic signature style.

Everything from the in-game cities and towns to the enemies and bosses--and, of course, Lightning herself--are rendered in such crystal clarity, painting a dazzling picture to a series that has continually pushed the bars of innovative RPG mechanics and distinctly amazing visuals.

Every character and environment is detailed in that signature magical "Final Fantasy" look, building upon the visuals within the first two games (Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2) to bring an all-new experience that keeps those trademark elements that fans have come to expect from the franchise. Square Enix's legendary RPG series has always ushered in a new era of both dynamic story-telling and amazing art-infused visuals to deliver a truly remarkable and engaging experience, bringing gamers into a new fantasy world where magic and mystery run rampant with our imaginations.

The screenshots themselves truly imbibe that sense of mystery and fantasy that have become distinct elements that make up the Final Fantasy franchise, giving gamers a brief look at the many environments and characters--as well as Lightning's brand new stylish look. Lightning Returns is no different in this regard, and looks to be one of the most graphically impressive titles in Square Enix's current line-up.

The newly released "The Final Journey of Lightning" trailer goes far to encapsulate the overall plot of the upcoming game, which continue the story arc set forth by the two previous titles before it: There are only thirteen days left until the world ends, and Lightning allies with her former team--including Snow Villiers and Hope Esthiem--to save the new merged world of Coccoon from the devastating Sea of Chaos that threateans to annihilate all life.

Lightning Returns follows the last days until the end of the world, chronicling the events that take place in her struggle to save the floating sky-islands of Nova Partus and New Coccoon from certain doom. Personally I find the plotline to the game to be quite inventive and creative, merging emotional turmoil with a destined Hero's Journey archetype, and Lightning--to me at least--is the ultimate female hero (besides maybe Samus Aran!). It will be interesting to see how the plot develops and what happens at the very end to conclude Lightning's epic and legendary saga that's spanned across a trilogy of games.

A release date for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be announced in 2013, and the game will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
